Brooke Harper

Brooke Jewell Harper, 18, of Monterey, passed away Monday, December 26, 2016 as the result of an automobile accident.  Brooke was born November 10, 1998 in Harrisonburg a daughter of Terry Lee Harper and Christy Joy (Gum) Harper, both of Monterey.

A Princess of the 2016 Maple Court and senior at Highland High School, Brooke had plans of furthering her education in sports medicine at JMU.  She was a member of the HHS Cheer and Dance Team, Highland FFA, Highland Girl Scouts – Troop 932, and played on the HHS Varsity Volleyball Team.  Brooke was a lifeguard in the summer and loved hunting, fishing and attending truck pulls with her father.  Brooke was especially looking forward to the birth of her nephew, who she referred to as “Nugget”.  Brooke loved time spent socializing with her friends and family, and will forever be remembered singing and dancing, but most of all for her big smile.

In addition to her parents, surviving family members include her sister, Amanda Harper and boyfriend, Nick Hardy of Petersburg, WV; paternal grandparents, Sheldon and Judy Waggy of Franklin, WV; maternal grandmother, Judy Rapp and husband, Daniel of Warren, PA; maternal grandfather, William “Bill” R. Gum, Jr. of Monterey; aunts, Connie Reel of Petersburg, WV and Meredith Inman of Lawrence, KS; uncles, Ray Gum and wife, Jenel of Monterey and Donald Inman of Los Angeles, CA; her godparents, Kandi “JoJo” and John Stanley and their children, Kamryn and Jake of Mooresville, NC; as well as many cousins and countless friends.

A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m., Friday, December 30, 2016 at Stonewall Ruritan Building, McDowell, VA with the Rev. Jessica Felici and Rev. Andre Crummett officiating.

Active pallbearers will be Billy Triplett, Tracy Triplett, Trace Triplett, Ronnie Gum, Ricky Gum, Bret Reel, Brandon Reel, and Brandon Lehman.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. and 6-9 p.m., Thursday at Obaugh Funeral Home.
