Hazel Irene Helmick, 88, formerly of Bridgewater, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Envoy of Staunton.
She was born on May 27, 1931 in Doe Hill, a daughter of the late Beulah (Smith) and John Albert Simmons. On November 20, 1947 she married Melvin Lee Helmick.
Hazel retired from Harrisonburg Travel Center. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, putting puzzles together and listening to bluegrass music. Above all, she will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Melvin; son, Jerry Helmick; and brother, James William Simmons.
She is survived by two daughters, Dottie Randozzo of Greenville and Barbara J. Dean of Crimora; a son Ira Helmick and wife, Barbara of Bridgewater; sister, Mary Wimmer of Woodbridge, nephew, Paul Puffenbarger; as well as nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2020 at Obaugh Funeral Home with pastor Gary Monroe officiating. Burial will follow in Puffenbarger Cemetery, Possum Trot Road, Monterey.
Active pallbearers will be David, Brent and Hunter Patterson, Doug Martin, Tommy Foster, Paul Puffenbarger, Frank and Kenneth Randozzo. Honorary pallbearers will be friends in attendance.
The family will receive friends, 6-8 p.m., Thursday, March 5 at the funeral home.
