Helen Freda Bird

Helen Freda Bird, 88, of Franklin, WV and formerly of Blue Grass, Va. passed away, Friday, March 12, 2021 at Pocahontas Center in Marlinton.

She was born July 31, 1932 in Mill Gap, Va., daughter of the late Lottie May (Doyle) and Moffett “Doc” Brown Turner. On August 3, 1957, she married Bill Bird, who preceded her in death, August 21, 1989.

A member of Green Hill United Methodist Church, Freda enjoyed church and helping with dinners. A great cook, she along with her sister Charlotte, organized many family gatherings and reunions. She also enjoyed bowling in the Highland Mixed Bowling League and visiting within the community. Above all, Freda will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She is survived by her daughters, Dottie Young of Franklin, Darlene Sue Hise of Staunton, Va., and Tammy Hoover of Ronceverte; six grandchildren, Jason Hise, Crystal Hise, Terry Turner, Brittany Young, Billy Hoover and Charles Hoover; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by her infant daughter, Elizabeth Jeannette Bird; siblings, Jim Turner, Charlotte Griffin and son-in-law, Clarence Hise Jr.

A graveside service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 16, 2021, in Green Hill Cemetery with pastor Bobbie Jo Gardner officiating.

Obaugh Funeral Home will receive family and friends wishing to pay their respects throughout the day Monday, March 15th, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Active pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.
