Melvin "Pete" Echard

January 4, 1927 — May 25, 2020

Melvin “Pete” Lee Echard, 93, of Monterey passed away Monday, May 25, 2020 at his home.

He was born January 4, 1927 in Highland County to the late William and Rosie (Halterman) Echard. On December 29, 1948 he married Norma Jean Rexrode.

A World War II Army Veteran and lifelong farmer, Pete was well known throughout the county to have been meticulous with the care of his farm and livestock, which he very much enjoyed tending to. In addition to farming, Pete had worked as a self-employed truck driver, drove for Home Oil and was employed with Hanover Shoe.  He was an avid deer and coon hunter as a younger man, but truly found enjoyment in working on his farm or simply cutting firewood, and in recent years enjoyed attending services at Monterey United Methodist Church.  Pete will be remembered as a well-respected community member and one who was loved by his family.

In addition to his wife of 71 years, Norma; he is survived his two daughters, Jeanette Lynn Jamison of Franklin, WV and Beverly Diane Echard of Monterey; granddaughter Alissa Smith of Harrington, Delaware; as well as his great-grandchildren, Kaeli Rae and Tarun Quinn Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his grandson, Gregory Lee Jamison; and his sisters, Grace Simmons, Lucy Puffenbarger, Mamie Armstrong, Catherine Echard and Allene Gutshall.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2020 in Monterey Cemetery,  with pastor Bobbie Jo Gardener officiating.
