Roger Moats

March 21, 1948 — December 23, 2020

Roger Lee Moats, 72, husband of Sarah Lynn (Moyers) Moats of Verona, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at his home.

He was born March 21, 1948 at King’s Daughters Hospital in Staunton, a son of the late James Floyd and Mabel (Varner) Moats.

Following graduation from Highland High School, Roger found employment at Crompton-Shenandoah Plant for a few years, but ultimately with the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company, where he retired after 45 years of service.  Fondly known to many in the community as the “Dr. Pepper man”, he was a member of the Churchville Lions Club and attended Hiner Church of the Brethren in McDowell.  Roger enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved spending his free time at the “White House” where lots of memories were made and stories told.  Above all, Roger will be remembered as a family man who valued every moment spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Charles, Allen, and Dennis Ralston; as well as sisters, Beulah Simmons, Daisy Hoover, and Bonnie Nuckols.

Surviving family members include his loving wife of 51 years; his daughter, Kim Hohenstein and husband, Mike of Mt. Solon; his son, John Moats and Nancy Smith of Mt. Solon; sisters, Wilma Harlow and Larry Simmons of Churchville, Dorothy Moyers and husband, Colin of Staunton, Mary Booth and Corieta Smith of Verona; grandchildren, Tyler and Blake Hohenstein,  Dustin, Hunter, and Wanda Maddox; special friends, Thomas “Tee” Floyd, Steve Harper, and Richard Botkin; as well as his dog, Charlotte, who was always by his side.

A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m., Monday, December 28, 2020 in Totten Chapel Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Fike officiating.

Obaugh Funeral Home’s staff will receive family and friends wishing to pay their respects throughout the day Sunday, December 27th between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Michael and Matt Sponaugle, Dustin and Hunter Maddox, Tyler and Blake Hohenstein and Scott Bird.
