Shirley Simmons

Shirley June (Newcomb) Simmons, 68, of Monterey, died on Tuesday, November 22, 1994 at Augusta Medical Center.

She was born on July 1, 1926 at Washington, D.C., a daughter of Don and Eula (Mullenax) Newcomb.

On Nov. 20, 1963 she was married to Kenton L. Simmons.

She was a member of Blue Grass United Methodist Church where she served on the administrative board and was superintendent of the Sunday School. She was chairman of the Highland County Democratic Party for 10 years and was a member of the Alleghany Blue Ridge Democratic Women’s Club and the Professional Nurses Association. She had been employed at the Highland County and Prince William County health departments. She had worked with Home Health Services, Pendleton County Nursing Home., Veterans Administration and other hospitals.

In addition to her husband, surviving are a son, Howard “Don” Ferrell of Manassas; and a sister, Bonnie N. Pugh of Monterey.

Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard James Ferrell, a sister, Margaret N. Washburn and a brother, Bruce D. Newcomb.

A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Blue Grass United Methodist Church by the Revs. James W. Tinney and Jack L. Schooler, with burial at Blue Grass Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Wilston and Stuart Simmons, Bruce D. Newcomb, Creigh Deeds, Austin Shepherd, James Thompson and Charles and Benjamin Schooler.

Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
