Steven Blair Puffenbarger

November 12, 1958 ~ September 27, 2020 (age 61)

Steven “Steve” Blair Puffenbarger, 61, of Hightown, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 27, 2020 at his home.

He was born in Staunton on November 12, 1958, a son of Dareld Gene and Ellen Sue (Harold) Puffenbarger of Hightown.

Steve was a member of Blue Grass United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Highland High School’s Class of 1977. Following graduation, Steve worked briefly for the Forestry Department before taking a job at VEPCO. He had to eventually leave work because of his health issues.

A true Highland County boy, Steve enjoyed the outdoors and loved deer and wild turkey hunting. He was known for his ability to call up a turkey like no other and liked feeding his deer and watching them grow. He will be remembered for giving his friends and hunting buddies a hard time for shooting young bucks and would always say “let them grow into big bucks.” Anyone who loved hunting and collecting guns could talk to Steve for hours and his favorite question was always “seen any big bucks?” He loved his home on the family farm and in his younger years before the loss of his eyesight, he enjoyed motorcycle riding and his beloved black ’78 Trans Am. Although Steve endured many health problems throughout his life, his will to live was like no other. His dad, Dareld, was his caregiver and best friend.

In addition to his parents, Steve is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Tammy and Charlie George of Upper Tract, WV and Melissa and Brian “Bubba” Moyers of Hightown; nieces, Leslie Bowers and husband, Shaun, Reshella Leary and husband, Brian, Laura George and Daisy Moyers; nephew, Kaleb Moyers; great-niece, Ava Bowers and great-nephew, Hudson Leary; as well as countless friends and hunting buddies.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, October 17 in Union Chapel Church Cemetery in Blue Grass with the Rev. Andre Crummett officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Highland County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 268, Monterey, Va. 24465.
