John "J.D." Brock

John “J.D.” Douglas Brock, 73, of the Mill Gap community of Highland County, passed away at his home on Friday, March 16, 2018.

He was born in Mill Gap, November 16, 1944, a son of the late Adam Hevener Brock and Alta (Crummett) Brock.

A 1963 graduate of Monterey High School, John went on to serve in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge.  On August 13, 1966, he married Sharon Lee Simmons of Mountain Grove, and they were later blessed with their two boys.

John worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for thirty-nine years starting out as a surveyor in Harrisonburg, and later transferring to Warm Springs, eventually becoming Maintenance Supervisor, while continuing to farm part-time. Following his retirement from VDOT October 31, 2003, he farmed his land fulltime.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and farming with farming being his love. John also enjoyed socializing with friends and family. Additionally, he was a member of Beulah Presbyterian Church, serving different terms as elder of the church.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Rita Brock Dunlap.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sharon Simmons Brock, of Mill Gap; his two great sons and their wives, James Michael and Marie Simmons Brock of Stuarts Draft and David Shawn and Diana Hilton Brock of Gloucester; four grandchildren, Adam Shawn Brock and wife, Chelsea of Charleston, S.C., Camela Marie Brock McCreesh and husband, Daniel, of San Diego, Calif., Michael Shane Brock, and Leanna Marie Brock of Stuarts Draft; two great-grandchildren Olivia Jane Brock of Charleston, S.C. and Liam Brock McCreesh of San Diego, Calif.; his brother and sister-in-law Clarence Joseph “Joe” and Phyllis Brock  of Mill Gap; as well as close cousin Sandra Crummett Fore of Mill Gap.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, March 19, 2018 at Obaugh Funeral Home with The Rev. C. William “Bill” Cox officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
