Lois Hope Johnson, age 86, widow of James Johnson, of Alpharetta, GA and formerly Monterey, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Ivy Hall Assisted Living.

Hope was born November 15, 1931in Vanderpool, a daughter of the late Wallace and Virginia (Ervine) Guthall.

She grew up in Highland County, graduated high school, and then moved to Richmond, where she worked as a secretary. There she met and married James Johnson on December 16, 1952 and following several transfers they settled in Atlanta, GA. Hope worked as a paraprofessional in the Atlanta City Schools System for 13 years teaching children reading. Later, she worked as the church secretary for Forest Hills Baptist Church. After retirement she and Jim returned to Monterey where they lived until his passing in May of 2015. Always, interested in history, Hope enjoyed collecting antiques and loved folk art painting, needlework and reading.  Additionally, she will be remembered as having been very active in her church community.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Amy Kiel and her sister, Betty Davis.

She will be missed by her two daughters, Rev. Jody A. Johnson of Louisville, KY and Lisa Kiel and husband, Gary of Lawrenceville, GA; three grandsons, Christopher Kiel of Austin, TX, Russell Kiel of Lawrenceville, GA, and Nathan Kiel of Mesa, AZ; sister, Wanda Folks of Monterey; as well as nephews, Charles Folks of Laurel, MD, Michael Folks of Monterey and Keith Folks.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Highland Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Monterey Cemetery.

Friends and family will serve as active pallbearers.

The family will receive friends during a meal of fellowship at Highland Baptist Church following the committal service.
