Thelma Hoover

Thelma Hicklin Hoover, 87, of McDowell, passed away in Afton Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the home of her daughter, surrounded by loving family.

She was born December 22, 1930 to William and Nettie (Phillips) Hicklin, in McDowell.

On October 12, 1946, she married Eugene Hoover, who preceded her in death on June 10, 2001. Additionally, she was predeceased by all her siblings, William Hicklin, Dorotha Hicklin Smiley, Richard Hicklin, Charles Hicklin, Shirley Hicklin, and Mary Hicklin Blackwell.

A native and lifelong resident of Highland County, Thelma was a homemaker, wonderful cook, and served faithfully with the McDowell Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She always took part in all the chores a farm requires but she was never too busy or tired to make family time special - her children always knew they were loved.

She is survived by her children, Carol Hoover Glascock of Stuarts Draft, Linda Hoover Will and husband, Jimmie of Blue Grass, Vickie Hoover of Monterey, Dennis Hoover of McDowell, and Connie Hoover of Afton; her grandchildren, Melody Long, Robin Michael, Kitty Rexrode, and Jamie Will; four great-grandchildren, Curtis and Seth Long, Reagan Rexrode, as well as Jaxson Will.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Obaugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Beth Pyles officiating.  Interment will follow in the Hoover family cemetery.

The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

At Thelma’s request, the casket will be closed.

Active pallbearers are Kyle Obaugh, Brent Obaugh, Larry Armstrong, Kenny Armstrong, Mike Armstrong, Gary Simmons, David Simmons, Dean Simmons, Mike Simmons and Steve Shumate.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the McDowell Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the McDowell Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, c/o Betty Rexrode, 527 Windrush Lane, Doe Hill, Va. 24433.
